Create a Solid "About" Page

One of the most important pages on your site, especially if you are a business owner, is a great "About" page. This page tells your potential customers about your company and why they should do business with you.

"What do I put on my About page?"

Figuring out what to put on your About page may seem intimidating at first, but there are a few basic points to include at a minimum:

  • Provide a summary of what you are offering. It may be obvious what your business is all about once a visitor comes to your site, but adding your personal perspective is essential to building trust.
  • Add in some details about your company's history and why you decided to provide this product/service to your customers.
  • Contact information. This can be an email address, telephone number, or contact form. It may not be necessary to create a separate Contact page if you can add contact information to an About page.

Make sure your writing is engaging and gives your customers a good idea of what to expect from your product or service. Be sure to check for spelling and grammatical errors; potential customers are more likely to take a business seriously when the website copy is well-written and free of errors. Don't be afraid to have a friend or colleague read it out loud and help check for mistakes.

Remember, About pages are also good for SEO!

Example: Standard About Page

Let's put together a standard About page from start to finish. Generally, you want to create a page about you and your product but for your visitor. This means being informative and personable. The site owner for this example will use an Image & Text module, because she will be adding a personal photo wrapped with text.

The site owner has also used a title module for "A message from our founder."

For this standard About page, the site owner has written a couple of paragraphs about the inspiration for starting the company, the company's commitment to customers and has provided a photo identifying the founder and CEO. Each of these choices were made to establish a rapport with potential customers and building trust.

But the page could use a bit more. Expand the next section for tips on how to enhance your About page.

"What else can I add to my About page to make it more effective?

Since the site owner is using a Sidebar Layout, she will add a few additional elements on the left column.

Under the Poplar tab at the bottom of the Builder are the Contact Form and Map modules.  Both of these modules allow visitors to interact with the page.

Under the Social tab you will find a selection of social media modules. Use these so your customers can follow you on Twitter, Facebook and other networks.

For the finished page, the site owner added the address, hours of operation and a small photo gallery at the bottom. The site owner decided to remove the map once she added the other elements in order to reduce visual clutter. The site owner also added a couple of decorative touches to make the page look even more professional.

Check your About page every few months to look for opportunities to update your information, especially if

  • your business model has changed
  • you earned positive testimonials or other good press
  • you won an award

Technically, there is no "right" way to create an About page. Just make sure that it's informative, welcoming, and builds trust with potential customers.
